Political Personalities in India

Politics refers to the way of governance of the people in a particular place or rather a country. Politics is something which cannot be defined to exist from a certain time period. 

Before India attained independence in the year 1947, before the British started its dominance and ruthlessness in the Indian community, before all of it, politics had already started to make its way into the surroundings.

Today Politics in India, is one of the major issues around the world. Having a personified image of its own, the Indian politics stand to shout out the name of a vast number of personalities, out of whom some have managed to make a positive impact and whereas the others have failed to make any impact on this coarse or rather made-coarse field. 

The political field in India boasts of a number of personalities such as Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Atal Behari Vajpayee, Manmohan Singh.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

Born on 11 December, 1935, Pranab Kumar Mukherjee is the 13th and current President of India and he has been in the president office since July, 2012. 

He is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress and has occupied various other ministerial portfolios in the Indian Government.  Before attaining the Presidential position he had been Union Finance Minister from the year 2009 to 2012.

Jayalalithaa: Born on 24 February, 1948 as Jayalalithaa Jayaram, she was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In the initial part of the career, she had even acted in films, Tamil and Telegu and then gradually made her entry into Politics. She was referred to as Amma meaning mother and also Puratchi Thalaivi meaning revolutionary leader by her followers.

Kabindra Purkayastha: He is an Indian politician. He is the former union minister of India and served as a minister of state for communication in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government from the year 1998 to 1999. He is also the senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam. Read More

L.K. Advani: Born as Lal Krishna Advani on 8th November, 1927, in Karachi ( now Pakistan), he is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is the current opposition 9in the Parliament of India.

Advani served as the Home Minister and Deputy prime Minister from 1998-2004 and 2002-2004 respectively. His political career started when he volunteered for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh which is a cultural organisation.

Mamata Banerjee:
Born on 5th January, 1955, Mamata Banerjee is the current and 8th Chief Minister of West Bengal. She is the first woman to hold this post in the state. 

She became the chair person of her founding party All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC or TMC) after separating from the Indian National Congress. She is usually called “Didi” which means elder sister in Bengali.

Manmohan Singh: Born on 26th December, 1932, Manmohan Singh is the current and 13th Prime Minister of India. He is the first Sikh to hold the office of the President and also the only one after Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power after the successful completion of a complete five year term. Singh’s family migrated to India after the Partition of India in the year 1947.

Mulayam Singh Yadav: Born on 22 November 1939, Mulayam Singh Yadav belongs to Uttar Pradesh and and is a politician from the Samajwadi Party. 

He has served as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for three times from the year 1989-1991, 1993-1995 and 2003-2007. Further he has also been the Defence minister in the United front government from 1996-1998.

Narendra Modi:
Born on 17th September 1950, as Narendra Damodardas Modi, he is the 14th Chief Minister of Gujarat. During the 1995 and 1998 Gujrat State elections, Modi was a key strategist who made the entire campaign a success. In October 2001, he first became the Chief Minister following the defeat of his predecessor Keshubhai Patel.

P. Chidambaram:
Born on 16th September, 1945, as Chidambaram Palaniappan, he is an Indian Politician who is the Union Minister of Finance of the Republic of India and also the member of Indian National Congress. He has also served as the Finance minister of India from 2004 to 2008.

Rajiv Gandhi: Born on 20th August 1944, Rajiv Gandhi is a prominent figure from the majestic Gandhi family. Being the elder son of Indira and Feroze Gandhi, he was never into politics until his younger brother Sanjay Gandhis death. Read More

Sharad Pawar: He was born on 12th December as Sharad Chandra Govindrao Pawar. He is the president of the Nationalist Congress Party which was self founded in the year 1999 after separating from the Indian National Congress. 

Pawar has also served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Minister of Defence. He is a very prominent figure in regional as well as national politics with a few corruption allegations on him.

Sonia Gandhi: Born as Edvige Antonia Albina Maino on 9th December, 1946 and Italian Native, she is an Indian politician. Widow of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi she has been the president of Indian National Congress Party since the year 1998. Since 2004 has served as the Chair person of the ruling United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabah as well.

Sushma Swaraj:
An iconic leader of Bhartiya Janta Party, she was born on 14th February, 1953. She was former Union Cabinet Minister of India and also the former Chief Minister of Delhi. She has been a six terms Member of parliament, three times MLA and also the Leader of Opposition in present 15th Lok Sabaha. Read More
