One of the most remarkable features of India’s culture lies in the colour and diversity in costumes. The country has a very rich and varied textile heritage, where each region has its own unique native costume and traditional attire. Indians mostly wear light cotton clothing, which are popular for their colour, texture and grace.
Climate plays an important role in Indian clothing. While people in the Kashmir valley wear a thick loose shirt called a phiran to keep them warm, in the tropical region of south India, men wear a sarong like garment called the mundu. Women in India usually drape themselves in a single length of material called as sari which has almost become the national dress of women in India. Sarees are also worn in different methods with respect to the age, occupation, region and religion of a woman.
Men prefer wearing the kurta and pyjama which is considered as the traditional dress of men. However, contemporary dresses like trouser, shirts and jeans are also popular among vast majority of people. Today, majority of Indian men and women wear traditional costumes but urban population are seen, more or less with conventional western clothing.
