Brahmo Samaj

Brahmo Samaj is said to be the most significant religious movement of the nineteenth century. Brahmo Samaj is actually a social component of the Brahmo religion. The Brahmo Samaj was founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy in 1820 against the idol worship in Hinduism.

The Brahmo Samaj is mainly considered to initiate the Bengal Renaissance of 19th century which resulted into the development in the fields of education and religion in 19th century.

Initially, the reform was named as ‘Brahmo Sabha’ in 1820 but later in 19th century, it was renamed as Adi Brahmo Samaj meaning the society of men believing in the worship of supreme power in spirit form but opposing the idol worship of the Almighty.

The community believed in one Supreme Being and the feeling of brotherhood across the universe. Many Hindus and even foreigners started following this new concept and today the religion of Brahmonism is legally recognized in India and Bangladesh.
