World Heritage Sites in India

Tour to India offers ample sites to be explored by the visitors. Visit to multidimensional country like India provides unique opportunities for tourists to discover different spots of the country with natural scenic beauty or with rich cultural diversity. The country is also enriched with great ancient heritage in the form of magnificent monuments or splendid temples with beautiful carvings. Out of these Indian gems, few are stated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

World Heritage Sites were conceptualized in 1972 by UNESCO, adopting a resolution of ‘Convention concerning the protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage' with the main aim of protecting these universal treasure for future generations. UNESCO compiled the list of World Heritage Sites from all over the world.

India is an active member State on the World Heritage from 1977 and has been working in close co-operation with other International agencies like ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites), IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) and ICCROM (International Centre for the study of Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property).

There are 27 World Heritage Properties in India out of which 22 are Cultural Properties and 5 are Natural Properties.
