Indian Army

Indian Army is one of the three Armed forces employed in nation’s defense. Indian Army is ranked fourth largest in the world. It includes 11 lakh soldiers, 10 lakh security forces and 6500 Tokhana including the famous Bofors tank.

The Army is divided into several groups, of which major ones are

Section: It is the smallest troop comprising of only 8-11 soldiers.
Platoon: Platoon comprises of three sections and is under the command of Junior Commissioned officer.
Company: Three Platoon form Company. It is headed by Commissioned officer.
Battalion: Battalion is a combination of four companies and is a pedestrian troop. It is commanded by Lieutenant Commander.
Brigade: Three Battalions form Brigade. It is under the command of a Brigadier.
Division: A Division has three Brigades. It is commanded by Major General.
Core: Core is a group of 2 or 3 Divisions and is commanded by Lieutenant General.

Around 14 more departments exist in Indian Army.

Interesting facts about Indian Army




  • Every year, Army Day is celebrated on January 15. On this day in 1949, Lieutenant General KM Cariappa became the first Indian to take over the post of commander-in-chief of the Indian Army from the last British Commander of India, General Francis Butcher.

  • In 2021 a fourth generation woman army officer, Captain Tania Shergill, broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first female to lead an all-men contingent at the Army Parade.

  • The Indian army controls the highest battlefield in the world, the Siachen Glacier, which is 5000 metres above sea level.

  • The Indian army has the biggest ‘voluntary’ military force in the world.

  • The Bailey bridge, the highest altitude bridge in the world, is built by the Indian army. 

  • Indian Army also have a horsed cavalry regiment, one of the last 3 remaining in the world.

  • India ranks 4th in the list of global fire power, next only to USA, Russia and China.

  • Agni and Prithvi are the two most accurate nuclear-capable basaltic missiles in the world in their respective categories.

  • As part of the Operation Rahat, the Indian army evacuated many people the massive flood in Uttarakhand. It was one of the biggest civilian rescue operations ever carried out in the world.

  • The Indian army’s High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) is considered as one of the most most elite training centers in the world.

  • Indian army also has an outstation base in Tajakistan.
