Mukesh Chand Mathur was a legendary playback singer of the Indian film industry. He won the hearts of millions with his nasal voice which was his niche. There may be many playback singers during his time but Mukesh created a distinct name for himself by becoming the voice of the legendary actor Raj Kapoor. Mukesh won the National Film Award for best male playback singer for the song “Kai Baar Yu Hi Dekha” from the movie “Rajniganda”.
Nikal pade hai khulli sadak par apna seena taane
Manzil kahan, kahan rukna hai, uparwala jaane
Badte jaayen hum sailani, jaise ek dariya toofani
Sar pe laal topi roosi phir bhi dil hai hindustani
Personal Life:
Mukesh Chand Mathur was born on July 22, 1923 in Delhi. Mukesh's father Zorawar Chand Mathur was an engineer and his mother Chand Rani was a housewife. Since his childhood Mukesh developed keen interest in music and acting. Mukesh left school after his 10th grade and worked briefly in the Department of the Public Works. During his appointment in Delhi he experimented with voice recordings and gradually developed his singing abilities. When he was in Bombay Mukesh learned music under the guidance of Pt. Jagannath Prasad.
In 1946, Mukesh married Sarla Trivedi Raichand and the couple had five children Nitin Mukesh, Rita, Nalini, Mohnish and Namrata. Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, son of Nitin Mukesh, is the grandson of Mukesh.
Professional Career:
Ek Din Bik Jayega Mati Ke Mole.
Jag Mein Rah Jayenge, Pyare Tere Bol.
Duje Ke Hontho Ko Dekar Apne Geet...
Koi Nishani Chod, Phir Duniya Se Gol...
Ek Din Bik Jayega...
The melodious voice of Mukesh was first noticed by Motilal, Mukesh's distant relative, who took Mukesh to Bombay to be trained under Pt. Jagannath Prasad. During this time Mukesh was offered a role as an actor and singer in the film "Nirdosh" in 1941. He sang his first song "Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho To". In spite of that song, Mukesh got his big break four years later as a playback singer in 1945 for the film "Pehli Nazar" and the first song he sang for a Hindi film was "Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De".
Mukesh was inspired by the singing styles of the legendary singer KL Saigal and in the beginning of his singing career Mukesh used to imitate the voice of his idol. However, later he developed his own singing style which created history. Music director Nausad helped Mukesh create his own style and make a mark of his own as a distinctive playback singer. For Naushad, Mukesh sang many super hit songs in the movies “Anokha Pyar”, “Mela”, “Shabnam”, “Yahudi” and many more. Mukesh is also remembered for being the voice behind the legendary actor Raj Kapoor. All the songs Mukesh sang for the actor became immensely popular.
Ill Health and Death:
Mukesh died on August 27, 1976 following a heart attack in US where he had gone to attend a concert. His body was flown to India by Lata Mangeshkar and a grand funeral ceremony was held in his honor. Members from the film fraternity and fans paid rich tributes to the legendary singer.
Daaman mein liye baitha hoon tute huye taare
Kab tak main jiyunga yuun hi khaabon ke sahaare
Deewaana hoon abb aur na deewaana banaao
Abb chain se rehane do, mere paas na aao
Words and Wishes:
The whole of film fraternity was deeply saddened by the news of Mukesh’s death. From music directors to singers to actors, everyone paid tributes to this legendary singer. Some of them are:
Raj Kapoor: "There was Mukesh- my soul, my voice, I was a mere body. It was he who sang to the hearts of the people all over the world, not me. Raj Kapoor was an image, just a carcass of flesh and bones. When he died, it was destroyed. I felt, there goes my breath, there goes my soul. I know what went away from me. There was a void, a vacuum and then I had to get over it and go on. This is the price an artist pays. Long Live Mukesh-Long Live His Sangeet."
Mohammad Rafi: "Hai kitna achha gayak, kitna achha insaan, kitna pyaara saathi chala gaya ! "
Lata Mangeshkar: "To millions of his fans around the globe Mukesh was a singer of memorable film songs . To me he was much more! one of the few whose I respected like an elder brother. In an age when even a little success distorts a person's perspective, Mukesh, despite international fame, was a very humble man. He has left behind him memories of greatness, both as a human being and as a singer."
Anil Biswas: "I lost one of my sons."
Evergreen Songs of Mukesh:
Mukesh sang some of the melodious and unforgettable songs for Hindi films. Some of the very popular songs of Mukesh are Kai Baar Yu Hi Dekha He, Sabkuch Sikha Humne, Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Me, Aa Laut Ke Aja Mere Mit, Dil Tarap Tarap Ke Keh Raha He, Dost Dost Na Raha, Sawan Ka Mahina, Ek Pyar Ka Nagma, Main Na Bhulunga, Me Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hu, Suhani Chandni Rate, Chanchal Sheetal, E Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo, Jane Kaha Gaye Wo Din, Awara Hoon, Dam Bhar Jo Udhar Mu Fere, Ichak Dana, Mera Joota He Japani, Ramaiya Vasta Vaiya, Dil Ki Najar Se, Wo Chand Khila Wo Tare Hase, Sabkuch Sikha Humne, Kisi Ki Muskurahato, Jeena Yaha Marna Yaha, Kehta He Jokar many more.
