Smt. Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi was born on August 1, 1924. She was born to a professional "Sankirtan Pala" aka late Koijam Bokul Singh of Uripok Bachaspati Liekai at Imphal. She learnt Manipuri dance and Manipuri songs under the guidance of eminent gurus of the state. She also learnt Hindustani classical music under them. She married Haobam Amuba Singh in 1941.
Career of Ngangbi Devi:
Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi is an acclaimed Manipuri raas exponent. She was the first woman to be associated with Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy since its foundation. She served as a teacher in the dance academy and was the vice principal at the same place by the time of her retirement. After her retirement she became the first woman pensioner of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy.
In 1960 she performed in the 34th Annual Conference and Concerts sponsored by the Music Academy of Madras (as an artist from a dance college). In 1963 she joined Inter State Cultural Exchange Programme in Kashmir and Punjab. She participated in the Manipuri dance in the cultural Programme at Jalpaiguri and Calcutta. She toured Shillong, Guwahati and Jorhat for dance recitals.
In 1955, Haobam joined the folk dance troop of a dance college and participated in the Republic Day Festival and also in the National Dance Festival at Delhi, in the same year. This was sponsored by the Government of India. In 1951 she was offered a gold medal by the Governor of Assam for the sword dance with the title “Birangana”. She identified potential dancers and singers of diverse forms in Manipur and promoted them through her association with the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy.
In accordance with being a dancer Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi is also a prominent singer. She was one of the first prominent classical singers in Manipur and was the first female singer whose classical renditions were heard in All India Radio Manipur. She sang some of the songs of the film “Mainu Pemcha”.
Awards and Recognition of Ngangbi Devi:
In 1951 Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi was offered a gold medal by the Governor of Assam for the sword dance with the title “Birangana”. She won a medal in the Manipuri Industrial Cultural Exhibition sponsored by the Government of Manipur. She was conferrer the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1993. In 2010 the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri for her contribution in the field of Manipuri music and dance. She was the recipient of the State Kala Academy Award in 1980 for her contribution in the field of Manipuri arts. In 1985 she was conferred the Natyabhushan Award sponsored by Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Imphal.
