Baba Hardev Singh, chief priest of the Nirankari sect was a respectable figure. He was known for preaching the message of human unity and equality in the society. During his lifetime he fought against many social evils. His ashram at Delhi is abode of spiritual teaching and social reforms.
Born on 23rd February 1954, Singh was deeply attached with his parents Gurbachan Singh and Kulwant Kaur . After completing his elementary education, he graduated from Delhi University. Singh became a member of the Nirankari Seva Dal in 1971 but soon rose to become the leader of the sect. He was made head of the Sant Nirankari Mission in 1980, to carry forward the legacy of his father father Gurbachan Singh who was assassinated by radical forces. He kept alive the tradition of the sect, expanding the network worldwide. He was fourth head of the sect that was founded in 1929. As of 2016, the organization has 2000 centers and millions of followers all over the globe.
Death
Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh who was travelling from New York to Montreal in a car along with his two sons-in-law Avneet and Sunny, met a fatal accident. The car which was at a very high speed lost control and overturned several times, critically injuring Baba and his son-in-law Avneet. Soon both were declared dead. Married to Savinder Kaur, he is survived by his wife and daughter Sudiksha Singh.
The sad demise of Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj on 13th May 2016 came as a shock to people in India and abroad. Lakhs of devotees were seen weeping after hearing the news of his sudden demise. His death was mourned by leaders from across communities. He will be ever remembered for his noble and spiritual teachings.
Both Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed their grief over sudden demise of Nirankari Baba Shri Hardev Singh. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi also mourned his death.
