Mallika Sarabhai is an eminent Indian classical dancer from Gujarat. Daughter of renowned space scientist Vikram Sarabhai, Mallika is a noted choreographer, dancer, activist, writer and actor.
Life of Mallika Sarabhai
Mallika Sarabhai was born in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in 1954 to renowned space scientist Vikram Sarabhai and classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai. Mallika completed her MBA from IIM Ahmedabad in 1974 and Doctorate in Organisational Behaviour from the Gujarat University in 1976. She started to learn dancing when she was young. Mallika has acted in a few Hindi and Gujrati films also. Mallika was married to Bipin Shah. The marriage did not last long and they divorced. They have two children. Presently Mallika is based in Ahmedabad and is engaged in dancing, choreography and social activism.
Career of Mallika Sarabhai
Mallika Sarabhai is a multifaceted personality. She is an accomplished dancer, choreographer, activist, writer and actor. Mallika is an eminent Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dancer. She is the co-director of the prestigious arts institution Darpana Academy of Performing Arts. She has performed with Darpana throughout India and around the world. As a choreographer Mallika has choreographed short dance pieces, dance-theatre and performance works.
Mallika is also an accomplished theatre personality. Mallika played the role of Draupadi in Peter Brook's play "The Mahabharata". She performed hard-hitting solo theatrical works, Shakti: The Power of Women. She acted in Bertolt Brecht's Indian adaptation of The Good Person of Szechwan. She also co-directed 'Women with Broken Wings,' an international production with film maker Yadavan Chandran and Swiss pianist Elizabeth Sombert. She has acted in Hindi and Gujrati films.
Mallika is also a social activist. Societal education and women’s empowerment are core to the issues she works as a social activist.
Awards and honours of Mallika
Mallika Sarabhai has been the recipient of many awards and honours. In 2010 she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, third highest civilian award in India. She was awarded the Theatre Pasta Theatre Awards in 2007. In 2002 she was honoured with Knight of the Order of Arts & Letters, French Government. She was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Creative Dance in 2000.
