Kabindra Purkayastha

Kabindra Purkayastha is an Indian politician. He is the former union minister of India and served as a minister of state for communication in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government from the year 1998 to 1999. He is also the senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam.

Kabindra Purkayastha was born in the year 1931 in Kamarkhal are in Syllhet district (now in Bangladesh). He did his Masters degree in Gauhati University.


Kabindra Purkayastha was first elected to the Lok Sabha in the eyar1 991 from Silchar constituency in Assam. He was then again re-elected to the Lok Sabha in the year 1998 from the same constituency. 

In the year 2009, he was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha by defeating heavyweight candidates Santosh Mohan Dev of the Indian National Congress and Badruddin Ajmal of All India United Democratic Front (AUDF) from Silchar.
