Ambikagiri Raichoudhry

Ambikagiri Raichoudhry (1885–1967) was an Assamese poet, playwright and nationalist. He was known as “Assam Kesari” (The lion of Assam) because of his firebrand nationalist character.

Life:

Ambikagiri Raichoudhry was born on December 18, 1885 in Raipara area of Barpeta. He was born toKrishnaram Raichoudhry and Devaki Devi. He was an eminent freedom fighter. 

He took part in the Indian Independence struggle and was arrested by the British government several times. Because of his firebrand nationalist character he is known as “Assam Kesari” (The lion of Assam).

Career:

The most notable works authored by the celebrated writer are “Tumi”, “Kaabyo”, “Aahuti”, “Joydroth Bodh”, “Binaa”, “Onubhuti”, “Bondoo Ki Sondere” and “Bedonar Ulkaa”.
Ambikagiri Raichoudhry was the editor of two Siamese magazines “Setonaa” and “Dekaa Oxom”.

He was the founder of the Oxom Xongrikhini Xobha and the Oxom JaatiyoMohaxobhaa. He was the president of the ‘Assam Sahitya Sabha’ in 1950.

Literary Works:

Ambikagiri Raichoudhry was the editor of two Siamese magazines “Setonaa” and “Dekaa Oxom”.

Achievements:

Ambikagiri Raichoudhry received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1965. The Assam Sahitya Sabha presents the Ambikagiri Raichoudhry award named after him.
