Amulya Barua

Amulya Barua ( 1922 – 1946 ) was an exponent of modern Assamese poetry. He composed a few poems which made mark in the history of Assamese literature.

Amulya Barua was born on 30th June 1922 in Jorhat. He passed out his matriculation from Jorhat Government High School in the year 1941. He passed his B.A examination from J.B College, Jorhat in the year 1945. 

Amulya Barua then went to Kolkata for his higher studies and got admitted to Calcutta University for his Masters. However, he was killed in the infamous communal violence of Bengal in the year 1946 along with many of his hostel mates. His immature death was an irreplaceable loss to the world of Assamese poetry.

Career of Amulya Barua:

His famous poems include ‘Andhaaror Hahakor’, ‘Beishya’, ‘Biplobi’ and ‘Kukur’. His only collection of poems was published in 1946 after his death. The transition from romanticism to modernization in Assamese poetry was done by Amulya Barua. He started his poetical career as a romantic poet. His poems represented a particular period of the Assamese society. He also preached the glory of mankind in his poems. His widely acclaimed poem ‘Koyla’ which was published in Cottonian in 1944 is a symbol of the people’s struggle. It is a documentation of transformation of human blood into coal (koyla means coal).
