Geeta Dutt (1930 – 1972 )

Geeta DuttGeeta Dutt was a famous singer of the Indian film industry. She has sung in many regional languages including in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Punjabi and Nepali. 

Geeta Dutt sang some of the best songs of her career for the film of her husband guru Dutt. 

She is the voice behind some of the classic songs of the Hindi film industry like Waqt ne kia”, “Na jao saiyyan chhudake baiiyan”, “Babuji dhire chalna” and “Mera naam chin chin choo”.

Life of Geeta Dutt

Geeta Ghosh Roy Chaudhry or Geeta Dutt was born at Faridpur in Bangladesh before the partition of India on November 23, 1930. She was born to Debendranath Ghosh Roy Chowdhry and Amiya Devi. Her family shifted to Kolkata in the early 40s. 

The family shifted to Mumbai in 1942. Geeta studied at the Bengali High School. She was married to Guru Dutt in 1953. They had three children. 

Geeta who had an unhappy married life took to drinking. After the death of her husband Geeta suffered nervous breakdown and financial constraints. She died of liver cirrhosis on July 20, 1972 at the age of 42 years.

Career of Geeta Dutt

Geeta Dutt had no formal training in music but she created her own style. She had a particular style of singing much adored by the listeners. She was a blessed singer who could sing bhajans, sad songs, western songs, romantic songs etc. 

Geeta Dutt has sung in many regional languages including in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Punjabi and Nepali. She sang some of the best songs of her career for the films made by her husband Guru Dutt. 

She also gave some classic numbers for SD Burman, OP Nayyar and Hemant Kumar. Music director K Hanuman Prasad was impressed by the singing of Dutt and suggested her parents to have her to try in the film industry. 

He later trained her and launched her in the film industry. She got her first break in the film industry as a singer in 1946 for the mythological film “Bhakt Prahlad”. Later she sang for the film “Do Bhai”, “Baazi”, “Pyar”, “Devdas”, “Pyasa”, “Sujata” etc.

Geeta Dutt lent her voice for the films like “Do Bhai”, “Baazi”, “Pyar”, “Devdas”, “Pyasa”, “Sujata”, “Kagaz ke phool”,“Baaz”, “Aar paar”,“Mr and Mrs 55”, “CID”, “Howrah Bridge”, “Sahib bibi aur ghulam” etc. 

The songs sung by Geeta Dutt are still remembered for the sheer melody and Geeta Duttsoulful rendition. Some of the popular songs sung by her include “Mera sundar sapna beet gaya”, “jane kya tune kahi”, “Waqt ne kia”, “Aaj sajan mohe ang lagalo”, “tabdeer se bigdi hui takdir bana le”, “hum aap ki ankhon me”, “Hawa dhire ana”, “Na jao saiyyan chhudake baiiyan”, “Piyan eso jiya me samaye gayo re”, “Chale ao chale ao”, “Babuji dhire chalna”, “Thandi hawa kali ghata”, “Jane kaha mera jigar gaya ji”, “Jata kaha he”, “e dil he mushkil jeena yaha”, “Mera naam chin chin choo”. 

She sang many Bengali modern songs. Notable among them are “Shachimata go char juge hai”, “Ei mayabi tithi”, “Tumi je amar”, “Nishiraat Banka chand aakashe”, “katha ache tumi aaj ashbe”among others.
