The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007 for his contribution to Indian cinema and music.
Life of Manna Dey
Manna Dey was born as Prabodh Chandra Dey to Mahamaya and Purna Chandra Dey on 1 May 1919. He received his early education in Indu Babur Pathshala. He was educated at Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College and was graduated from Vidyasagar College.Since his childhood Manna De was interested in music. He started doing stage shows since his childhood. Manna Da took music lessons from Krishna Chandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan. Manna Da was very inclined towards classical music.
He learnt Hindustani classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan. He was married to Sulochana Kumaran with whom he had two daughters. The legendary singer died of a cardiac arrest on 24 October, 2013.
Film Career of Manna Dey
Manna Dey was one of the successful singers of the Hindi film industry. He along with Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh dominated the Indian film playback music from the 1950s to the 1970s. Manna Dey started his career in playback singing with the movie Tamanna in 1942.
The musical score "Jago Aayee Usha Ponchi Boley Jago" with Suraiya became an instant hit. And after that there was no looking back for the singer. The maestro sang some of the beautiful and unforgettable songs of the film industry. Death - Indian singer Manna Dey has died in a Bangalore hospital at the age of 94.
Awards of Manna Dey
Manna Dey received numerous awards in his lifetime in the field of music. He was awarded the Padma Shri Award by Government of India in 1971. In 2005 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan Award by the Government of India.
In 2007 he was awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Award by the Government of India. Other than these he was also awarded national awards and many awards by different states.
