Aribam Shyam Sharma

Aribam Shyam Sharma is a film director and music composer from Manipur. He was the first Manipuri film music composer to compose music of the first Manipuri film “Matamgi Manipur”. 

His film “Imagi Ningthem” was the first Indian film to receive the Grand Prix at the festival des Three continents, Nantes. He was awarded the Padmashree and the V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to cinema.

Sharma was born in 1936 at Imphal in Manipur. Since his earlier days he showed much interest in music and theater. During his school days he was involved in many theatrical productions. 

He studied Rabindra Sangeet and philosophy at Vishvabharati, Shantineketan. In 1960 he joined the department of Philosophy in DM College of arts as a lecturer. Later he served as its HOD.

Sharma has directed 11 feature films and 27 non feature films. His films have won 16 national awards. Sharma debuted in the Manipuri film an as an actor in the movie “Matangi Manipur”. He directed his first film in 1974 “Lamja Parshuram”. His notable filmography includes “Matangi Manipur”, “Lamja Parshuram”. 

Then followed “Saaphabee”, “Sagol Sanabai” “The Deer on the Lake”, “The Choosen One” etc. With “Imagi Ningthem”, he put North east India on the map of the world Cinema. Dubbed as “The Surprise of Filmotsav” it was acclaimed by the International film community as a masterpiece. 

The film was the first Indian film to receive the Grand Prix at the festival des Three continents, Nantes. His documentary includes, “Tales of Courage”, “Keibul Lamjao National park”, “Koro Kosii”, “Sangai: Dancing Deer of  Manipur”, etc. He is the founder president of Imphal cine Club.

His directions of plays “Ashangba Nongjabi”, “Khongchat” etc mark the start of experimental theatre in the state.

Sharma is an excellent music composer. His music compositions for films have become classics in his lifetime. He has studied Rabindra Sangeet at Vishvabharati, Shantineketan. 

He received "sangeet visharad" from Bhatkhande Institute, Lucknow. His compositions reflect the folk, indigenous and traditional music of Manipur.
 
He was the first Manipuri film music composer with his music compositions of the first Manipuri film “Matamgi Manipur”. His first song is “Khammu khammu Mitki Pirang”. He is the singer and founding member of the music group “Roop Raag”.

Awards and Achievements of Aribam Shyam Sharma

His film “Imagi Ningthem” brought him international recognition. The movie received the golden Montgolfiere in the Nantes Film Festival in 1982. With “Imagi Ningthem”, he put North east India on the map of the world Cinema. 

“The surprise of Filmotsav” it was acclaimed by the International film community as a masterpiece. The film was the first Indian film to receive the Grand Prix at the festival des Three continents, Nantes . His film “The Chosen One” was screened in the Un Certain regard section at the 1991 Cannes film festival.  

His film “The Dancing Deer of Manipur” was declared the “outstanding film of the year’ by British Film Institute at London film festival in 1989.

In 2006 he was awarded the Padmashree for his contribution to Indian cinema. In 2008 he was conferred the V Shantaram lifetime achievement award in 2008. 

In 2006 he was hoonoured with the title of Sangeet Ratna by Manipur Sahitya Parishad. The Manipur Film Development Council Lifetime Achievement Award 2010 was awarded to Sharma.
