Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricketer. Widely regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen in cricket history, Gavaskar set world records during his career for the most Test runs and most Test centuries scored by any batsman. 

Nicknamed Little Master, Gavaskar held the record of 34 Test centuries for almost two decades which was broken by Sachin Tendulkar in December 2005.

Sunil Manohar Gavaskar was born on 10 July 1949 in Bombay, Maharashtra. Sunil was interested in cricket since his childhood. 

Young Sunil was named India's Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the year in 1966. He was an alumnus of Bombay's renown St. Xavier's College. Sunil is married to Marshneill Gavaskar. The couple have a son Rohan who is also a cricketer.

Sports career of Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar is one of the greatest and successful cricketers of India. Gavaskar's  game was built around a near-perfect technique and enormous powers of concentration. He represented and captained the Indian cricket team. 

One of the greatest opening batsmen in cricket history, Gavaskar played 125 Test matches and scored 10,122 runs. In a career spanning over 16 years he made 35 centuries at the international level. 

Sunil Gavaskar was widely admired for his technique against fast bowling, with a particularly high average of 65.45 against the West Indies, who possessed a four-pronged fast bowling attack regarded as the most vicious in Test history.

Gavaskar was the captain of the Indian team on several occasions in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was a fine slip fielder and his safe catching in the slips helped him become the first Indian to take over a hundred catches in Test matches. He was a right-hand batsman and a right-arm medium bowler.

Sunil made his Test debut against the West Indies in March 1971. Gavaskar scored his first century in the third Test of the same series.  Sunil became the first player to score two centuries in a Test match for the third time when he made 107 and 182 not out in a match against the West Indies in December 1978.

Gavaskar made his One Day International debut against England at Headingley in 1974. His last ODI was against England in 1987. His last Test was against Pakistan in 1987.

The greatest cricketer, Gavaskar  made many records, some of which were broken and some remained still. Notable among Gavaskar's records are that Gavaskar was the first Test cricket player to make over 10,000 runs. Gavaskar also held the record for the highest number of test centuries (34) which Sachin Tendulkar went past in 2005. 

He was the first batsman to score 10,000 Test runs and held the record for most runs until Allan Border surpassed it. Gavaskar has the Highest runs (774) maker by a debutant. 

He is the only cricketer to score 4 consecutive centuries at 2 venues, Port of Spain and Wankhede stadium. As of 2012 Sunil was the third-highest run scorer for India in Test cricket after Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Post retirement Gavaskar has served as a television commentator, columnist and analyst and has  taken on various responsibilities. 

In February 2012 the International Cricket Council inducted him into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. On 28 March 2014 the Supreme Court of India appointed him as the Interim BCCI President primarily to oversee 7th Season of Indian Premier League.

Awards and achievements of Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar has been awarded the Padma Bhushan. In 2012 Gavaskar was awarded the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for Cricket in India. Sunil was named the Indian Cricket Cricketer of the Year in 1971. In 1980 he was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year.
