Nuchhungi Renthlei

Nuchhungi Renthlei (1914-2002) is a Mizo poetess and a popular singer. She was awarded the Padmashree by the Government of India in 1986 for her contribution in the field of literature.

Life and literary career of  Nuchhungi Renthlei:

Nuchhungi Renthlei was born in 1914. Her father’s name was Hmingliana. She was married to R Raualkhuma. She passed Middle English from the Baptist Missionary society, Langlui, Mizoram.

Nuchhungi Renthlei started writing fictional stories since her childhood. After becoming a teacher she started writing books for children as well as for adults. She has contributed to the preservation of Mizo culture through her poems.

She also composed seventy two songs. She has also composed a number of cradle songs, rhymes and responsive songs. She has eighty two poems in press. She was also a popular singer in her earlier days. She later became a music teacher and taught music. She also taught children traditional Mizo dance.

She developed an association and cultural society to teach students traditional dances. In 1939 she started Girl’s Auxiliary. She strived for women’s liberation.
