Atul Chandra Hazarika was born on September 9, 1903. He obtained MA degree from Calcutta University. He worked as a teacher of Assamese literature later and retired as the HOD of Assamese in Cotton College. He died on June 7, 1986.

Career:
Atul Chandra Hazarika authored more than 100 books in Assamese language. His magnum opus “Monchalekha” traces the five hundred years of Assamese drama and stage. In the 1930s he wrote a record number of dramas.He gave a new lease of life to the Assamese stage. His dramas include “Amar desh”, “Nanda Dulal”, “Beula”, “Narakasur”, “Rani Himani” etc. He has written several short stories also. His adaptations of Western classics like “Grimor Xadhu” and “Andersonor Xadhu” became very popular.
He compiled and edited the works of several writers. His collection of poetry include “Monimala”, “panchajonyo”, “Dipali”, “Koumudi”, etc.
Hazarika was also one of those pioneer names who were responsible for giving a new dimension to the main festival of Assam – Bihu by getting associated with different founding committees in Assam which organized some of the initial Bihu on stage, around sixty years back.
He is considered as one of those people who gave a new lease of life to the ‘Axom Xahityo Xobha’ during the 1950s. In the year 1959, he became the president of this literary organization.
