Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is a former Indian cricketer. The captain of the Indian national team, Saurav Ganguly is regarded as one of India's most successful captains. Saurav is one of the most successful Indian Test captains to date winning 21 out of 49 test matches.

Sourav Ganguly was born in a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family on 8 July 1972 in Calcutta. He was born into an affluent family of Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly and was called 'Maharaja' in his childhood. 

He studied at the University of Calcutta. Ganguly was introduced into the world of cricket by his elder brother Snehasish. He started his career by playing in state and school teams. He is married to Dona Ganguly.

Career of Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is one of India's most successful cricket players. Affectionately called Dada, Ganguly proved to be one of the most successful captians of the Indian cricket team. Initially Saurav played in different Indian domestic tournaments like Ranji and Duleep trophies. Later he got his big-break while playing for India on their tour of England. 

In the match he scored 131 runs and cemented his place in the Indian team. Saurav had shown outstanding performances in series against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia. In the 1999 Cricket World Cup he was involved in a partnership of 318 runs with Rahul Dravid which remains the highest overall partnership score in the World Cup tournament history.

Saurav led India into the 2003 World Cup final where they were defeated by Australia. the Indian team was ranked at second position as per ICC rankings under his tenure as captain. 

Saurav was an aggressive captain and is credited with transforming the Indian team into an aggressive fighting unit and having nurtured the careers of many young players. Sourav has many records to his credit. This left-handed batsman showed outstanding performance in One Day International with over 11,000 ODI runs to his credit. 

Saurav is the 5th highest run scorer in One Day Internationals. Saurav was also the 3rd person in history to cross the 10,000 run landmark after Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam Ul Haq. 

He is one of the most successful Indian Test captains to date winning 21 out of 49 test matches and the most successful Indian test captain in overseas with 11 wins. Saurav is one of the three players in the world to achieve amazing treble of 10,000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches in ODI cricket history. 

He was the seventh Indian cricketer to have played 100 Test matches and the 4th highest overall run scorer for India in Tests. He is the 4th Indian to have played in more than 300 ODIs. Ganguly is the second among Indians after Sachin Tendulkar in terms of overall runs scored in ODIs.

Saurav has scored 16 centuries in Test matches and 22 in ODIs. Saurav along with Tendulkar has formed the most successful opening pair in One Day Cricket. 

They have scored more than 7000 runs and hold the world record for creating most number of 50-run partnership in the first wicket. As of 2006 he is the only Indian captain to win a Test series in Pakistan.

In 2008 he joined the Kolkata Knight Riders team as captain for the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament. The same year he announced his retirement from international cricket and continued to play for the Bengal team. 

He is also one of the co-owner of the Indian Super League, a football league team. Currently he is a cricket commentator and President of the Editorial Board with Wisden India.

Awards and recognition of Saurav Ganguly

  • The only cricketer to win four consecutive man of the match awards in One Day Internationals.
  • The ninth highest run-scorer in ODI history and third among the Indians, with 11,363 runs.
  • He holds the record for registering the highest individual score by any batsman in a ICC Champions Trophy final 
  • He was also the first player to score 3 centuries in the history of ICC Champions Trophy
  • The second fastest batsman to reach 9,000 ODI runs after AB De Villiers of South Africa who broke Ganguly's record in 2017
  • One of the only six cricketers to have achieved the unique treble of 10,000 runs, 100 wickets & 100 catches in ODI cricket. (Others cricketer were Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Jacques Kallis, Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan.)
  • Has the highest individual score by an Indian batsman (183) in the Cricket World Cup.
  • One of the 14 cricketers in the world to have played 100 or more Tests and 300 or more ODIs.
  • Sourav Ganguly is the only batsman to score a century on debut and to be dismissed first ball in his final Test innings.
From 2015 to October 2019, he was the President of the Cricket association of Bengal. In October 2019 he became President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
