He was married to Samyukta, the daughter of Jai Chandra Rathod. Their love story is a popular romantic tale in India. He was imprisoned by Muhammad Ghori and was blinded by him.
He was tortured by Ghori. At an archery competition Prithiviraj struck Ghori dead with his arrow. He was killed shortly after the death of Ghori.

The Chauhan army fought with valor in the battle. On being defeated Ghori’s army fled the scene and Ghori became a captive at the hands of Chauhan. Later Chauhan released Ghori. Ghori now rearranged his forces to defeat Chauhan in the battle the next year.
In 1192 the second battle of Tarain was fought. Pritiviraj was, however, defeated and captured in the battle. As a prisoner Prithiviraj was presented before Ghori. As he looked straight into the eyes of Ghori the latter asked him to lower his eyes to which Pritihiviraj replied that the eyes of a Rajput are lowered only when he dies.

Angry at the reply, Ghori ordered for blinding the eyes of Prithiviraj. The heinous act was executed and the eyes of Prithiviraj were burnt with red hot iron rod. His biographer Chand Bardai now asked Prithiviraj to take avenge of the insults meted at the court of Ghori.
Ghori later announced a game of archery. Prithiviraj also participated in the game. At the competition Ghori ordered Prithiviraj to shoot. Prithiviraj on hearing the voice of Ghori shot at the direction from where Ghori’s voice came and struck Ghori dead with his arrow.
