Patricia Mukhim a journalist, writer, teacher and activist from Meghalaya. She is involved in the social upliftment activities of the people of Meghalaya.
She is a gender activist, a trainer and an independent researcher. Editor of the Shillong Times, the oldest and the largest selling English daily of Meghalaya, Mukhim is a specialised person in the field of conflict management, consumer right, corruption, gender sensitization, rural poverty etc.
She has campaigned for ending militancy in the region and also worked for the drug addiction among the youths. She was awarded the Padmashree by the Government of India in 2000.
Life and journalism career of Patricia Mukhim:
Patricia Mukhim is based in Meghalaya. She is a BA and B.Ed. She is a social Science researcher particularly of the Khasi matrilineal society and its transition over the years. She worked as a teacher since 1974. She quit teaching in 2002.
Patricia Mukhim has been a writer with the Shillong Times since 1987. She also contributed to the Telegraph, Eastern Panorama, the Statesman and North East Daily.
She is a specialised person in the field of conflict management, consumer right, corruption, gender sensitization, rural poverty etc.
She has campaigned for ending militancy in the region. She also worked for the drug addiction among the youths. Patricia Mukhim is a widely travelled person and delivers talks at national and international forum.
She has attended international conferences in Japan, Thailand, UK, and African Countries etc. She took up the project called indigenous Women’s resource Centre in Shillong which provided gender training, advocacy, and capacity building.
She has been a member of the State planning Board of Meghalaya for several years. Currently she is the Director of Indigenous Women’s Resource Centre, Shillong. She is also a member of the District Consumer’s forum.
Achievements of Patricia Mukhim:
Patricia Mukhim is a recipient of the “Chameli Devi Jain Award” given to an outstanding mediaperson in 1995 by the media foundation, New Delhi. She was awarded the Padmashree by the Government of India in 2000.
She received the Outstanding Women Journalist Award by FICCI-FLO, Mumbai in 2008 and the Shiva Prasad Borooah Award for Journalism in 2009.
