Skendrowell Syiemlieh

Skendrowell Syiemlieh was a Khasi folk and gospel singer. He was a singer, composer and musician per excellence. Syiemlieh was the first playback singer for the first Khasi film “U Manik Raitong”. He was posthumously awarded the Padmashree in Arts by the Government of India.

Skendrowell Syiemlieh was a musician and an accomplished artist of the “duitara” instrument. He was the first playback singer for the first Khasi film “U Manik Raitong”. He began with playback singing but later switched to fulltime gospel singing.

He was associated with the All India Radio Shillong since 1962. He served the Khasi society through his songs. He wrote lyrics of his songs and created own tune. He composed several songs and published albums based on the theme of Khasi culture. “Ka Kalbari” is one of his best albums.

Skendrowell Syiemlieh received the best vocalist award in 1975. In 1991 he received the U Tirot Singh award for Arts and Literature. He was posthumously awarded the Padmashree in Arts by the Government of India.
