Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)

ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) functions under aegis of Ministry of Culture and is concerned with protection of India's heritage and archaeological researches.

Thanjavur Royal Palace Museum, Thanjavur (Tanjore)

The local name for Thanjavur Maratha Palace Complex (situated within the Vijaynagara Fort complex) is 'Aranmanai' and is the official residence of Bhonsle family who ruled over Tanjore region (1674-1855). 

There is the Sadar Mahal Palace, Durbar Hall, Queen's courtyard, Raja Serfoji Memorial Hall etc. The museum is located in the Sadar Mahal Palace.

Museum in Tripura

Tripura State Museum at Ujjayanta Palace, Tripura

The Ujjayanta Palace is where past rulers of Tripura lived. Built in 1901, it is built in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. There is a spacious garden and lake in front of the palace. 

Famous Indian poet Rabindranath Nath Tagore named the Palace as Ujjayanta Palace. 

This is the biggest museum of North East India. There are 16 galleries which include historical gallery, archaeological gallery, anthropological galleries etc.

Indian Museum, Kolkata - Oldest and Largest Museum in India

The Indian museum in Kolkata was established in 1814 by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata (founded by Sir William Jones in 1784).

The museum houses collections of fossils, mummies, Mughal paintings, antiques, ornaments, armours etc. which have been displayed across 35 galleries! 

An autonomous institution, it functions under the Ministry of Culture and is the oldest museum in the Asia-Pacific region. The new building has been designed by Walter R Granville and was completed in 1875.

Indian Museum in Kolkata

Visitors to this museum love to have a glimpse of the Egyptian mummy which is not less than 4,000 years old! Other artefacts and antiques in the museum include fossils of prehistoric animals, Buddha's ashes, Indian Emblem -the Ashoka Pillar, Buddhist stupa from Bharhut, collection of meteorites, stone imprint of Buddha's foot, skeletons of elephant and reindeer and other statues of Lord Buddha.

There is the Marshall Wood's statue of young queen Victoria standing aloft at the top of the stairways. Zoological Survey of India is an offshoot of this museum. 

Thomas Nelson Annandale (1876-1924), a Scottish zoologist was the Director of Zoological Survey of India who has been commemorated by a plague displayed in the museum.

National Museum, New Delhi

National museum in Delhi was established in 1949 with the blueprint for the museum set up by Gwyer Committee set up by the government. 

It was inaugurated by Governor-General of India, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari in August, 1949. Foundation stone for the present building was laid by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 12 May, 1955.

National Museum in New Delhi

On the first floor of the museum is the National Museum Institute of History of Arts, Conservation and Museology established in 1983 which is a deemed university and offers courses in Master's and Doctorate in History of Art, Conservation and Museology. Administration and funding is done by Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism.

The Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh

A building designed by none other than Le Corbusier himself who planned Chandigarh city, has to be special in all aspects! Well, with partition in August 1947, collections were divided between the two countries - India and Pakistan.

Shankar's International Dolls Museum, Delhi

This dolls museum was established on 30th November 1965 and boasts of a collection of around 6,500 dolls! It was set up by political cartoonist K. Shankar Pillai (1902-1989) and is a part of the Children's Book Trust building.

International Dolls Museum, Chandigarh

This dolls museum was established in 1985 by Chandigarh administration and Rotary club. A toy train, puppets and dolls collected from different parts of the globe have been displayed here.

National Rail Museum, Delhi

There are more than 100 real size exhibits of Indian Railways in National Rail Museum in Delhi - working models, photographs, antique furniture, old coaches like Prince of Wales Saloon built in 1875, Maharaja of Mysore's Saloon built in 1899 and Fairy Queen, built in 1855 which is a steam locomotive engine. Cellular Jail National Memorial Anthropological Museum, Port Blair

Cellular Jail in Andamans

The jail is a National Memorial today and is constructed of cells whitri-colorch were used to confine freedom fighters under solitary confinement. It was established by the British in 1906. 

Indian tri-colour flag was hoisted on 30th December 1943 by freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose to proclaim Independence near the jail. Sound and light show 'Son-et-Lumiere' show is displayed every day inside the jail premises.
