Museum of Himachal Culture and Folk Art, Manali

This museum of Himachal Culture and Folk Art, Manali is located in the vicinity of Hidimba Devi Temple at Manali, about 2 kms. from the main town of Manali. The museum was established in 1998 by J.R. Sood and displays folk art, culture and even extinct traditions of Himachal Pradesh.

Established by Yashodhar Mathpal, an artist and archaeologist, this museum is a living folk art museum. There are cave paintings from Madhya Pradesh state to regale you! 

Lok Sanskriti Sanghrahalaya - Museum of Folk Culture was founded in 1983 and displays a collection of paintings and sculptures. It preserves around 300 paintings (including water colours on folk life) in the Art Gallery and also boasts of a library. You get an insight into the Kumaoni way of life.

Udaipur Folk Museum, Rajasthan

Also known as Bharatiya Lok Kala Folk Museum, this is a folk-art museum has an incredible collection of masks, dolls, paintings, puppets, musical instruments, puppets etc. 

Scholars come here for research work and is a popular museum in Udaipur. This museum was established by Devilal Samar in the year 1952 to preserve art and culture of Rajasthan.

D.N. Majundar Museum of Folk Life and Culture, Lucknow

This museum was established in 1975 by Ethnographic and Folk Culture Society, Lucknow. It has done well to preserve the tribal art, craft, artefacts and collections pertaining to tribals belonging to U.P. and M.P.

Shreyas Folk Museum, Ahmedabad

The museum was established in 1977 with the aim of preserving the art and culture of Gujarat. It is located in the Shreyas Tekra hill of Ambavadi near Sabarmati. Y

ou will be amazed seeing the leather work, paintings, animal decorations, wood carving and metal work displayed in the museum. Calico Museum of Textiles is another famous museum in Ahmedabad.

The Museum of Anthropology and Development, Allahabad

Also known as Manav Vikas Sangrahalaya, this museum was established in 2001. There are two galleries in the museum - Manav Vikas ki Katha and Ganga River Culture gallery. Research projects are also being carried out here and the museum is working in collaboration with Anand Bhawan (Allahabad),State Department of Culture, IGRMS (Bhopal) KIT Tropen Museum, Amsterdam.

National Museum, New Delhi

The anthropology collection of National museum comprises of around 10,000 anthropological objects, with special attention to the culture and lifestyle of tribal people. 

You will be able to see their smoking pipes, costumes, headgears, craft items, puppets and even musical instruments etc.

Anthropological Museum in Mysore, Karnataka

This museum displays a collection of weapons, armours etc. which tribal communities of South India use in day to day life. There are around 1,000 such artefacts including bows, knives, ornaments, baskets and earthen utensils displayed in the museum.

Anthropological Museum, Port Blair

This museum in Port Blair is one of the best in this city and showcases the lifestyle of indigenous tribal communities by means of photos, artefacts, and other ancient collections. 

If you want to learn more about tribal people of South Andaman Island, this is a place you must visit. Displayed items include baskets, jewellery, tribal weapons (used for fishing and hunting), utensils, clothes etc.

You get the opportunity to know more about indigenous tribes like Jarawa,Shompen and Onge. The museum also flaunts a gift shop. So, carry your experience with you in the form of a souvenir!

Anthropological Museum, Jagdalpur, Chattisgarh

Set up in 1972, this museum displays the tribal culture of Bastar region which has a large tribal population. You are introduced to the rich tribal crafts and culture and other traditions of the tribal population.

Cellular Jail National Memorial Anthropological Museum, Port Blair

The jail is a National Memorial today and is constructed of cells whitri-colorch were used to confine freedom fighters under solitary confinement. It was established by the British in 1906. 

Indian tri-colour flag was hoisted on 30th December 1943 by freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose to proclaim Independence near the jail. Sound and light show 'Son-et-Lumiere' show is displayed every day inside the jail premises.

Zonal Anthropological Museum, Nagpur
