Unemployment in India

India has been facing huge problem of unemployment and underemployment from years. The state of joblessness for an able man and who is willing to work is known as unemployment. 

NSSO defines unemployment as a situation in which all those who owing to lack of work, are not working but seek work through employment exchanges, intermediaries, friends or relatives.

Various problems like enormous increase in the population, age, vocational unfitness and physical disabilities, technological and economic factors have caused this problem. 

Other problems also contribute towards unemployment. Several socio-economic problems like poverty, malnutrition, antisocial and criminal activities, drug and substance abuse, etc. are the result of ill effects of unemployment.

According to The rate for the current weekly status (CWS) in urban areas for persons of all ages was 10.3 per cent in October-December 2020, the survey showed. The unemployment rate for persons of age 15 years and above in January-March 2021 was 9.3 per cent in urban areas, the 11th Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) showed.

It showed the unemployment rate among females in urban areas was 11.8 per cent in January-March 2021. India's unemployment rate falls to 6.57%, lowest since March 2021: CMIE.

Is there any scheme for unemployed in India?

The Pradhan Mantri Rozgar Yojana or PMRY is a Central Government initiative that aims to provide self-employment opportunities to educated youths who are unemployed. The scheme, launched in 1993, offers an unemployed loan to youth and women. 

The objective of the PMRY scheme is to provide employment opportunities via subsidised financing to the educated unemployed youth and women of the country by setting up a large number of micro-enterprises.

Atal Pension Yojana 
The Co-contributory Pension Scheme by Department of Financial Services aims to encourage people from the unorganised sector to voluntarily save for their retirement and to lower the cost of operations of the New Pension System (NPS) for such subscribers.
