Dipankar Bhattacharjee (1972 – Present )

Dipankar Bhattacharjee is a sportsperson and a star badminton player of Assam who has represented India in many occasions including the Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics. He is the first Olympian from Assam. He is also the only male badminton player from India to have made it to two Olympics.

Dipankar Bhattacharjee was born on 1st February, 1972 and raised in Guwahati in Assam. He started playing badminton from a very small age. He was two years old when his father Mr. Iswar Bhattacharjee enrolled him for badminton training. His father was his first coach and has been always a constant support and an advisor who started local tournaments in the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium to attract the attention of young kids and their parents to for the badminton sport. Apart form being trained by his father, Dipankar Bhattacharjee was also trained by some of the renowned names in the sport of badminton. Dipankar Bhattacharjee spent few years in Prakash Padukone’s badminton academy located in Bangalore and trained with Prakash Padukone, Vimal Kumar, national level badminton coaches and state level coaches. These teachers have been a constant guide to his achievements. Dipankar Bhattacharjee is married to Dahlia Bhattacharjee of Kolkata and the couple has a son Anirban.

Sports Career of Dipankar Bhattacharjee:

Dipankar Bhattacharjee has been the star attraction in many leading tournaments. His style of playing is fast paced, endurance and offense (smash) based performance which attracts onlookers. He has won many titles and laurels in his career. He has participated in many international tournaments representing India including Barcelona and Atlanta Olympics. He has been the Indian National Badminton Champion three times and twice has been the runner up. In the Barcelona Olympics, he was ranked 8th in the World Olympics rankings. He has also won different titles as the Junior National Champion in Chennai in the year 1987, the Senior National Champion title thrice, Sub-junior National runner up in Guwahati in the year 1980, Senior National runner up twice. He has also been nominated for the Arjuna award for a couple of times. Dipankar Bhattacharjee has also been praised by Prakash Padukone as India’s one of a kind player who had the potential of taking on the champions from other Asian countries like China and Indonesia, who could match their level of speed endurance and reflex.

During his career and training, he often used to get injuries which due to lack of proper medical treatment could not heal properly. As such, Dipankar Bhattacharjee finally retired from badminton in the year 2004 after playing the last Indian National Championship in Guwahati. Presently, he is focusing on putting together his dream badminton coaching academy in Guwahati. The center ‘Iswarati Center for Badminton Learning’ is underway and efforts to establish this academy are going on. He is looking forward to the change of role from being a good badminton player to a successful badminton coach and entrepreneur. He wants to popularize badminton among the young folk and children of today. Dipankar Bhattacharjee is also working in the capacity of a manager in the Indian Oil Corporation.

Achievements of Dipankar Bhattacharjee:

Dipankar Bhattacharjee’s achievements have set him into a number of record books. He is the first Olympian from Assam apart from being the only senior National Badminton Champion from the North East till the year 2006. He is the only male badminton player from India to have made it to two Olympics subsequently in the 1992 and the 1996 Olympics. He has also been nominated for Arjuna Awards for a couple of times.

    A brilliant player. I was the junior of Dipankar's brother Ripon at National Institute Of Technology, Calicut, Kerala. I am thinking of taking Badminton seriously from now on. He is an inspiration to all of us.
